Jaguar's success story that is the F-Type

Purposeful, beautiful and timeless is how Jaguar described its swanky new F-Type when it was launched to an eager motoring world at the start of the year.
Arguably, with almost three-quarters of a century of car building, those Jaguar ‘Types’ know their stuff and, once again, they are not far wrong.
Whether it is coupe or convertible, the F-Type is a sports car with stunning looks, created by beautiful flowing forms that have riven a much-admired seam through a rich sports legacy.
In short, the F-Type has had a fantastic facelift, rather than a complete redesign and both the coupe and the convertible look racier and sleeker.
In short, it simply looks like it can’t wait to start the race and, with a turbo-charged 2.0 litre, four-cylinder, rear wheel drive to start, the ride is pretty attractive too.
But then again, this gorgeous two-seater, with a starting price of around £54,000, does have a huge deal of competition.
There are many more rivals on the road than there ever were ‘roaring’ at the heels of this timeless classic. The fact that the Jaguar is still here, in its continued prime and still fighting hard in a fierce battle for first place in the prestige market, means it has definitely kept up the pace.
And this new-looking kid ‘off’ the blocks matches up well.
Noteworthy rivals could include, at the top end of the collection and costing anything up to £100,000 and beyond, the V8 F-Type must face up to the Porsche 911, Aston Martin Vantage, and the Mercedes SL. For entry-level competitors, with a price tag of around £53,000 to £80,000, you could think about the Porsche Boxster and Cayman, as well as upscaled versions of the BMW Z4, Audi TT and possibly the Ford Mustang
Whether it’s the coupe or the convertible, from the outside, it is clearly a Jaguar but with a good number of sleek updates appearance-wise. These include a pair of rather lustrous, feline-looking, premium LED headlights with signature DRL coupled with a shiny, newly designed nose that truly means business.
This particular update was inspired by the flowing forms of models from Jaguar’s rich 84-year history, such as the C-type and D-type.
There are a range of engines, all of them powerful and responsive, including options for eight and four cylinders. All have been matched to Quickshift transmissions with full manual control using either the SportShift gear selector or the steering wheel-mounted paddles.
There is more driver-focused technology in the new F-Type and this is embraced by a reconfigurable, high-definition, 12.3-inch Interactive Driver Display, Touch Pro infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Two Meridian sound systems also offer enhanced sound reproduction.
In addition, helping to avoid the need for too many retailer visits, there is software-over-the-air functionality so future software updates can be made at your own convenience.
In the cabin, lightweight slimline seats combine an ergonomically-optimised form, further enhanced by heating and cooling options. The seats come in two forms: Sport and Performance. The F-TYPE and F-TYPE R-Dynamic models come with the purest Sports version as standard. The Performance seat has more pronounced support at shoulder height and is standard on the R and First Edition models.
R models feature gloss black bezels around the apertures, making the car look even more assertive, while aerodynamically-optimised strakes serve to further reduce drag.
The air vents are positioned further forward for greater efficiency and blend into the sculpted aluminium that surrounds them. Further back, the fender vents now proudly feature the Jaguar Leaper.
Rich materials such as Windsor leather add a further touch of luxury, complemented by details such as the beautifully-crafted monogram stitch pattern – repeated in the door trim – and Jaguar Leaper and R motifs in the headrests.
The seat belt guides are finished with discreet ‘Jaguar Est. 1935 markings’, repeated on the glovebox release button surround. This subtle reference signifies the year the Jaguar name was first used by company founder Sir William Lyons to brand one of his beautiful, cars. When it comes to space, boot space in the F–Type Convertible has a surprising 132-litres which is unaffected by the folding of the roof. There is the optional space-saver spare wheel but it will take up much of the boot space.
New to the range is the 450PS supercharged V8. Unique to F-TYPE, this 5.0-litre engine has been developed to offer exploitable, useable and rewarding performance – its maximum torque of 580Nm being generated from just 2,500rpm.
It is offered with a choice of all-wheel drive and – for purists – rear-wheel drive, and each drivetrain is completed with an electronic active differential to further optimise traction. Whichever configuration the customer chooses, they will be able to experience acceleration from 0-60mph in just 4.4 seconds, and a maximum speed of 177mph.
The pairing of Jaguar’s sports car with the 300PS 2.0-litre turbocharged Ingenium engine delivers enhanced agility and improved efficiency and affordability. This is a true F-TYPE, with its own unique character. This model retains the performance expected from the F-TYPE, and can accelerate from 0-60mph in only 5.4 seconds and achieve a top speed of 155mph.
The turbocharged engine’s high maximum torque of 400Nm generated from just 1,500rpm, together with technologies including fully variable control of intake valve lift, integrated exhaust manifold and twin-scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearings, delivers exceptional response throughout the rev range. It also makes this the most efficient F-TYPE in the range, with fuel economy of 34.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 184g/km (NEDC-equivalent).

We’ve re-designed the exotic clamshell bonnet to enhance the purity of form and accentuate its length. The beautiful flowing surfaces subtly reference great Jaguar cars of the past, while the new vents blend perfectly into the sculpted aluminium around them.
Enhanced wheel designs, and a fresh look for the side-vent using the Jaguar ‘Leaper’ detail add to the F-TYPE’s modernity. The powerful rear design has new slim, elegant lamps incorporating latest LED technology and our Jaguar ‘Chicane’ rear signature graphic with intricate monogram pattern.
And everywhere you look, you’ll find relentless attention to detail – each is a work of art in itself.”
