The name, ‘Jaguar’, is synonymous with luxury and speed represented in that iconic and never to be mistaken emblem of the big cat, chosen for its sleek lines, power, and speed. This British car brand has been beloved of celebrities and film stars over the decades and was a popular favourite in police and crime programs during the 1960s and 1970s which has only increased its already mighty cachet.
Jaguar was founded a little later than some of the other famous car brands, in 1922 and was originally called the Swallow Sidecar Company – not very inspiring – because the company started life-making sidecars. The name change came in 1945 because of the unfortunate similarity with the elite division of the Third Reich in Germany. Prior to that, in 1922, what had then become SS Cars launched a two-seater sports car at the 1929 London Motor Show, a Jaguar in all but name. An illustrious history followed under the Jaguar brand with some spectacular cars including the XK210, the fastest car in the world when it was launched in 1948, and the legendary XJS. The first XK120 was bought by the American movie star, Clark Gable. The model featured a removable windscreen so that it could reach a top speed of 120mph with less wind resistance.
In 1960, Jaguar merged with the Daimler Motor Company, not Daimler-Benz, but just Daimler which was another highly esteemed British car maker who moved under the Jaguar umbrella. This was a marriage made in heaven and only fuelled the potency of the Jaguar brand.
Jaguar is all about superior engineering and attention to detail and this translates right through to the final finish. Before a Jaguar model is painted, the car is brushed with ionised emu feathers which hold an electrostatic charge meaning that the plain metal won’t attract any dust particles between the final cleaning and paint job. There is an exceptional and radical climate testing process for all Jaguar cars and even the cowhide for the leather seats is harvested from specially selected Aberdeen Angus bulls with strict rules about how the animals are cared for throughout their lives.
In 1984, Margaret Thatcher’s government established a protective protocol for Jaguar that prevented its acquisition or absorption by foreign carmakers. The government retained a 50% share protection called ‘the golden share’ specifically for this purpose although this measure was removed in 1990 and the bidding war began in earnest with America’s Ford motor company winning Jaguar in the same year. Ford did not achieve the success it had hoped for with Jaguar and sold its shares to Tata Motors in 2008.
Jaguar remains a name synonymous with style, speed, and luxury and is still a huge presence in the world of motorsports. The hood ornament of the Jaguar in-flight known as ‘the Leaper’ was removed from the cars in 2005 under European safety legislation along with bonnet adornments on other makes of the car but this in no way diminishes a brand that is still right up there with the best and holds a huge affection in the hearts and minds of the British motoring public.
